10 TIPS TO BUYING CHILDREN'S SOFTWARE (http://www.kidsource.com)

Cathy Miranker and Alison Elliott, authors of The Computer Museum Guide to the Best Software for Kids, offer these 10 tips for buying children's software.

Before you go shopping:

* Know the exact capabilities of your computer system. Write down the details so you can compare them to specifications on software packages.
* Research software titles that match your child's interests, age, school needs and learning style. Use an independent resource likeThe Computer Museum Guide to the Best Software for Kids to get the kind of information you need to meet the needs of your individual kids.
* Select titles before you go shopping. Don't expect help at the store. Sales people know what software sells but they don't evaluate titles for educational quality or effectiveness.

At the store:

* Buy two titles at a time, at most. Build your library carefully over time.
* Read the fine print on the package. Check your notes to make sure your computer meets the program requirements.
* Learn the store's return policy. Choose retailers that will let you return a CD-ROM if it does not live up to expectations held by you or your child.

At home:

* Familiarize yourself with software before you show it to your children, and be around when they first use it to make sure they figure it out.
* Put away some programs for a month, once in a while. Your kids will approach software with a fresh perspective when you re-introduce it.
* Join your child at the computer. Your participation as her audience or partner is more important than any program.

Part 1 Troubleshoot a Windows XP (www.webtechgeek.com)

Part 1

Using System Restore

Using System Restore - Returning Your System to a Predefined State with System Restore
By Raymond Garcia, WebTechGeek

Most trouble starts right after you install a new program, upgrade a program to a newer version, or upgrade Windows to a new version. If a new program interfere with the operation of other programs or when Windows' operation and performance degrades over time. You may wish that you could return it to the way it ran a few weeks or months ago.

Windows XP contains a utility called System Restore, it was introduced in Windows Me. Windows System Restore watches your system work, when program are installed, changed, or deleted.

It keeps a log of changes how many changes you make to your system. You can also have it take a "snapshot" a (restore point) of the state of your system and save it. You might want to take a snapshot right after you have installed Windows for the first time, along with the applications you use. So if you decide that an installation or some other fault has damaged your system's stability, you can have System Restore return your system to the way it was when you took the restore point snapshot. WebTechGeek.com

When have Windows System Restore create a restore point, it makes copies of the critical files that define how the system works and what applications it is registered to use in the Registry, Windows program files, and all other program files. It then stores these copies, which are used at a later time to restore the system to that state, in another location on your computer's hard drive.

Note: Not all files are copied, only program files. Your documents aren't stored Windows System Restore does not take the place of regular backups your files you create and edit. System Restore restores programs, not documents you created. It doesn't restore Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, Access databases, text files, Web pages, or files in the My Documents folder.

Tip: Be sure to make regular backups of your files. To protect yourself against from major damage. If you use Windows XP Pro, you should consider making a Automated System Recovery floppy disk, which can help in restoring your hard disk if Windows is too damaged to run System Restore. System Restore creates a number of restore points automatically:

Initial system checkpoint Created the first time you start your computer after installing Windows XP.
System checkpoints Created every 10 hours that Windows is running or every 24 hours (or as soon thereafter as you run Windows again).

Program installation checkpoints Created when you install a new program, it records the state of the system just before the installation.

Fortunately, Windows XP comes with a number of diagnostic tools that can help. Microsoft has also added one new tool, Remote Assistance, which allows Microsoft technicians to fix your computer over the phone.

Just a little common sense may help you solve some simple hardware and software problems, like loose cables. McAfee FireWall (www.webtechgeek.com)

McAfee Personal Firewall

McAfee Personal Firewall places a protective barrier between Internet criminals and the personal information on your PC. Ideal for dial-up or broadband (DSL, cable) Internet connections, Personal Firewall Plus not only blocks online thieves but lets you trace the source of hacker attacks, avoid future threats and alert the proper authorities (including ISPs or law enforcement). And it's from McAfee Security, the most trusted name in online security.

McAfee Personal Fiewall: Price $29.95. McAfee Firewall software builds a protective barrier around your computer to secure and defend it from Internet hazards such as hackers trying to steal private information, a Trojan horse taking control of your PC, or other insidious dangers. McAfee Firewall makes Internet security just as simple in practice. This firewall is easy to set up and protects your system from incoming and outgoing communications on dial-up and broadband services. McAfee Firewall also thoroughly logs and tracks security events, so you can keep detailed records of any threats. It filters both inbound and outbound communications and protects both dial-up or direct Internet connections such as DSL or cable modem. It also filters all applications, system services, and protocols, including file and printer shares (NetBIOS), IP protocols (TCP/IP, UDP/IP), service-based protocols (FTP, Telnet), ARP/RARP, and DHCP. Additionally, it blocks IPX and NetBEUI on a per device basis.

If you want something easy to use and effective then give this a try. This update fixes many of the limitations found with previous versions. For example, you can now block or unblock specific IP addresses.

Computer FireWall (www.webtechgeek.com)

Computer FireWall's: Computer users are unaware that the Internet user's can access your PC just as they can access the Internet. If you use DSL or a cable modem to access the Net, you most likely have a static IP address assigned by your provider, which means that your machine is permanently exposed to the Internet. We've all heard about hackers ranging from so called Script Kiddies launching mostly annoying hacks, to professional hackers trying to vandalize or break into corporate networks. Here you'll find a list of the best Firewall programs, plus some tips to avid getting hacked!

Here are some tips to avoid getting your computer hacked:

1. Turn off file sharing if you don't need it. If a port scan is done on your computer, a hacker may find a back door to your machine and have access to your files via file sharing.

2. Don't open attachments. Will help you avoid the installation of Trojan horses and viruses.

3. Don't let other people onto your computer unless you really trust them. A great way to do this is to password protect your compute.

4. Use an up to date antivirus program and keep it up-to-date. If you don't have a antivirus program get one!

5. This is extremely important, Routinely update Windows software. The updates will fix many bugs and known security holes within the Windows operating system.

6. Use a firewall if you have a constant Internet connection. More information below.

7. The best way to protect your PC from Internet intruders is to install and set up a firewall. Corporations usually run expensive hardware-based firewall's to protect their networks, but for the individual's PC, I recommend personal firewall software.

Firewall's not only protect your system from hackers, they also keep unauthorized programs from accessing the Web.

If you have a Cable/DSL Router (Linksys) that's all the firewall for your home or small business needs, I'm a fan of hardware-based firewall's. You don't need to install the the firewall software and it doesn't take up any of your computer resources. You can easily add more computers to the network and they're all protected under that single firewall.

Using Software Based Firewall: If you want to feel safer or sometimes hardware firewall's isn't available for example, when your traveling with your laptop you may feel more comfortable turning on your software-based firewall.
