Conficker katanya nagmuk di Indonesia. Benarkah ??

Berdasarkan laporan dari Kaspersky Lab, dalam periode 23 Juli - 30 Juli 2009, conficker alias kido ini masih menjadi momok malware yang paling menakutkan di Indonesia. Peredaran Worm conficker di Indonesia meningkat hingga level 50%.

Kaspersky Lab melaporkan wor ini jauh meninggalkan malware HEUR:Trojan.Win32.Generic di posisi kedua dengan presentase hanya 8,2%. Selanjutnya ada Heur.Win32.Trojan.Generic di posisi ketiga dengan 5,8%.


Kaspersky menjelaskan, konten berikut merupakan konten yang dikumpulkan dari server Kaspersky berdasarkan jumlah serangan yang dikirimkan ke Kaspersky Security Network melalui interaksi antar peserta user dari masing-masing negara.

Untuk menyeleksinya menjadi Top 100, setiap deteksi malware berdasarkan negara membutuhkan serangan kepada koleksi server Kaspersky yang berjumlah lebih dari 7.000.

BANDUNG, KAMIS - Perusahaan Listrik Negara meluncurkan listrik prabayar, yaitu sistem pembayaran dan pembelian listrik yang dilkukan diawal, sebelum pemakaian. Harapannya, sistem ini bisa menghemat penggunaan listrik. Uji coba listrik bayar pertama kali akan dilakukan di Kota Bandung, yaitu pada 1.000 pelanggan rumah tangga.

Direktur Utama PT PLN Eddie Widiono mengatakan, Kamis (17/1), di Bandung, pilot project listrik prabayar ini pertama kali dilakukan di wilayah Jawa Barat, khususnya Kota Bandung. Jabar sengaja dipilih karena mewakili 70 persen konsumen listrik yang ada di Pulau Jawa.

Akan tetapi, tujuan utama dari produk listrik prabayar ini adalah untuk memberi kemudahan kepada pelanggan melakukan penghematan listrik, disesuaikan dengan penggunaannya. "Sasarannya adalah pelanggan yang madani, yaitu pelanggan yang bertanggung jawab. Dan secara gradual (bertahap) bisa memilih penggunaan listrik yang lebih hemat," ujar Eddie, usai meluncurkan listrik prabayar, di Hotel Horison, Bandung.

Sementara itu, menurut General Manger Distribusi Jawa Barat dan Banten Murtaqi Syamsudin, listrik prabayar memberi kemudahan dan kedisiplinan pelanggan untuk membayar. Namun, untuk tahap pertama ini, uji coba masih dilakukan di Kota Bandung, dengan target 1.000 pelanggan listrik.

Setelah tiga bulan pertama, akan dilihat respon pelanggan, keuntungan lebih yang bisa dinikmati pelanggan, serta kesiapan jaringan PLN. "Secara jujur, saya masih belum tahu kelanjutannya. Kita akan melihat darri uji coba dan evaluasinya. Jika berhasil akan diperluas," kata Murtaqi.

Nantinya, PLN menargetkan 30 persen pelanggan baru bisa menggunakan listrik prabayar. Sementara ini, pembelian token (voucher listrik isi ulang) baru bisa dilakukan di Bank Bukopin, melalui anjungan tunai mandiri maupun payment point online banking (PPOB) mitra Bukopin.

"Sekarang ini memang pembelian token baru bisa dilakukan di Bukopin dan kantor pos, tetapi sudah ada 4 bank yang sedang melakukan pembicaraan teknis dengan PLN. Rencananya, pertengahan tahun ini, token pulsa listrik prabayar itu sudah bisa dibeli di semua ATM bank," ujar Murtaqi.

Direktur Utama Bank Bukopin Glen Glenardi menambahkan, keuntungan yang bisa diperoleh Bukopin adalah adanya pemasukan dari bea transaksi, serta penambahan jumlah nasabah dari pelanggan PLN. Targetnya, dari sekitar 6 juta pelanggan PLN yang sudah bertransaksi di Bukopin, sebanyak 10 persennya bisa menjadi nasabah Bukopin, dengan melihat kemudahan fasilitas yang ditawarkan.

Keuntungan itu bukan hanya bagi Bukopin dan pelanggan listrik, tetapi juga PLN yang bisa mengurangi biaya operasional abonemen listrik pascabayar. "Kalau setiap tahun tumbuh 10 persen nasabah baru dari pelanggan PLN, itu kan sudah lumayan sekali," ujar Glen, usai peluncuran listrik prabayar.

Untuk saat ini, listrik prabayar masih dikhususkan kepada pelanggan rumah tangga, sedangkan pelanggan industri masih dalam kajian. Nilai token listrik prabayar yang bisa dibeli di ATM Bukopin maupun PPOB Bukopin mulai dari Rp 20.000, Rp 50.000, Rp 100.000, Rp 250.000 dan Rp 500.000.

Saya lihat di feed mengenai pembasmian virus Confiker di komputer rekan-rekan, saya tergugah untuk mencari beberapa info lagi mengenai pembasmian virus ini. Adappun ciri-ciri jika komputer anda terkena virus Confiker adalah :

Virus yang berhasil menyebar dengan sukses bukan virus paling ganas atau paling rumit, melainkan virus yang paling populer. Dalam konteks penyebaran virus, virus akan menjadi populer jika ia mampu “membuat” dirinya diaktifkan di sebanyak mungkin komputer. Caranya adalah dengan mengeksploitasi celah keamanan, memanfaatkan kelemahan sistem yang ada dan terakhir yang menjadi keahlian pembuat virus lokal, rekayasa sosial. virus ini mengeksploitasi celah keamanan RPC Dcom.

Pada awalnya, patch RPC Dcom yang pertama di release pada bulan Agustus 2003 khusus untuk menghadapi serangan virus Lovsan atau lebih terkenal dengan nama Blaster. Patch RPC Dcom dengan kode MS03-039 awal tersedia di http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824146 dan secara efektif berhasil menghalau dan menghentikan virus Blaster. Dan ini rupanya bukan akhir cerita eksploitasi RPC Dcom karena pada April 2004 Microsoft kembali mengeluarkan patch MS04-012 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-012.mspx karena ada beberapa spyware yang diketahui mengeksploitasi celah keamanan ini seperti W32/Rbot.AWJ. Hebatnya lagi, Rbot.AWJ rupanya tidak hanya mengeksploitasi celah keamanan MS04-012 tetapi segambreng celah keamanan lain seperti MS04-011 (LSASS), MS03-007 (WebDav), MS04-011, CAN-2003-0719 (IIS5SSL), MS01-059 (UPNP), CAN-2003-1030 (Dameware Mini Remote Control), MS04-007 (ASN.1), MS05-039 (PNP). Setelah dua kali dieksploitasi, tahun 2008 ini celah keamanan RPC Dcom kembali di “oprek” dan dieksploitasi dengan cara lain sehingga Microsoft buru-buru mengeluarkan tambalan / patch MS08-067 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx.

Seberapa parah celah keamanan RPC Dcom part III ini ?

Jika anda pemain game komputer, berbeda dengan film-film Hollywood yang umumnya sekuelnya kalah sukses dengan film pertamanya. Game komputer dengan seri makin tinggi pada umumnya makin canggih dan makin menarik perhatian gamer dan selalu berhasil mengalahkan game pertamanya. Contohnya adalah game Warcraft III yang jelas lebih bagus dari Warcraft I, atau Civilization IV yang tentu lebih menyenangkan dimainkan ketimbang Civilization I dst. Celakanya, celah keamanan RPC Dcom ini juga mengikuti jejak game komputer. Tidak seperti celah keamanan RPC Dcom awal, celah keamanan RPC Dcom part III ini bukan saja mampu mengeksploitasi celah keamanan di Windows XP Service Pack 3 dan Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, tetapi Windows Vista dan Windows Server 2008 juga rentan terhadap ancamana celah keamanan ini. Bahkan gilanya Windows 7 Pre Beta juga rentan terhadap eksploitasi celah keamanan RPC Dcom III ini.

· Severity Rating Critical artinya virus mampu menyebarkan dirinya secara otomatis tanpa dapat di cegah oleh pengguna komputer.

· Severity Rating Important artinya ada persetujuan yang perlu diberikan user dengan mengklik sesuatu. Dalam Vista bentuknya adalah Pop up User Account Control.

Jika kita perhatikan, Windows Vista dan Windows Server 2008 relatif lebih aman terhadap eksploitasi celah keamanan RPC Dcom 3 ini dibandingkan Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 dan Windows 2000. Tetapi hal ini bukan menunjukkan bahwa Vista dan Server 2008 tidak dapat di eksploitasi. Yang membedakan “hanya” satu pop up yang pada Windows Vista dinamakan User Account Control (UAC). Seperti kita ketahui, mayoritas pengguna Windows yang awam akan cenderung mengklik tombol [Continue] [Ok] [Yes] [I Agree] dibandingkan [Cancel] [No] tanpa berpikir panjang. Apalagi jika Pop up UAC ini muncul terus menerus jika di klik [Cancel] dan mengganggu aktivitasnya, kemungkinan besar supaya Pop Up UAC tidak muncul lagi pengguna komputer pada akhirnya akan memilih mengklik [Continue] yang akan menjalankan virus ini di komputernya.

Ciri komputer / jaringan terserang Conficker

Jika mendadak komputer anda mendapatkan pesan Generic Host Process (GHP) Error dan setelah itu koneksi internet dari komputer tersebut mati, maka kemungkinan besar jaringan komputer anda sudah tercemar oleh Conficker. Penyebabnya bukanlah komputer yang menampilkan pesan GHP error tersebut, melainkan karena (minimal) salah satu komputer di jaringan anda sudah terinfeksi Conficker dan secara otomatis melakukan scanning ke jaringan lokal dan menyebarkan dirinya ke semua komputer yang rentan atau belum di patch MS 06-037.

Jika ada komputer yang berhasil di infeksi, maka Conficker akan melakukan beberapa rutin canggih yang membuat geleng-geleng kepala antara lain :

1. Melumpuhkan System Restore.

Conficker akan melumpuhkan System Restore dengan cara mereset “Restore Point” guna mencegah korbannya membasmi virus ini dengan mengembalikan Restore Point. System Restore adalah fasilitas “Mesin Waktu” yang tersedia di beberapa OS Windows seperti ME, XP dan Vista yang berfungsi sebagai backup system OS dan dapat membantu mengembalikan setting komputer pada keadaan normal jika suatu saat terjadi kesalahan instal program yang tidak diingini ataupun karena terinfeksi virus.

2. Membuat HTTP Server.

Conficker akan membuka port random antara 1024 s/d 10.000 dan menjalankan fungsi sebagai web server (HTTP server) bagi jaringan lokal. Jika ada komputer di jaringan yang memiliki celah keamanan RPC Dcom 3 yang belum di patch, maka ia akan mencoba menyerang dan jka berhasil maka komputer korbannya akan mendownload ke HTTP server yang dibuat tadi untuk mendownload file virus dan menjalankannya. Selain itu, dalam aksinya ini Conficker menyebabkan matinya Internet connection Sharing.

3. Melakukan patch pada komputer korbannya.

Setelah berhasil menginfeksi komputer korbannya, Conficker akan melakukan patching pada komputer korbannya, jangan berterimakasih dulu kepada virus ini. Tujuannya melakukan patch adalah untuk mencegah infeksi ulang yang malahan akan mengakibatkan komputer tidak stabil sehingga tidak bisa mencari korban baru.

4. Download File untuk update dirinya.

Conficker meniru antivirus akan berusaha mendownload file (kemungkinan updatenya di masa depan) ke beberapa website yang telah disiapkan daftarnya (250 domain) dengan tujuan mempersulit vendor antivirus untuk memblok domain-domain update tersebut satu persatu.

Langkah Pencegahan

Jika komputer anda menampilkan pesan adanya virus Conficker secara berulang-ulang meskipun sudah dibersihkan oleh antivirus anda, pertama-tama yakinkan bahwa virus tersebut tidak aktif di komputer anda. Caranya adalah dengan memutuskan hubungan komputer ke jaringan. Jika setelah hubungan ke jaringan diputuskan infeksi virus terhenti, maka artinya sumber virus bukan dari komputer anda melainkan dari “salah satu” komputer di jaringan. Karena itu anda harus mencari sumber penyebar conficker di jaringan sebelum mengkoneksikan komputer anda. Logikanya, semua komputer yang belum di patch RPC Dcom 3 dan terhubung ke jaringan dimana ada satu komputer saja yang terinfeksi virus conficker akan terinfeksi conficker dalam waktu singkat, kecuali komputer-komputer tersebut di lindungi oleh Firewall yang memproteksi port :

* UDP Port 135, 137, 138 dan 445.

* TCP Port 135, 139, 445 dan 593

9. Untuk pembersihan virus W32/Conficker.DV secara optimal dan mencegah infeksi ulang, sebaiknya menggunakan antivirus yang terupdate dan mampu mendeteksi virus ini dengan baik dan patch komputer Anda dengan patch resmi dari Microsoft guna mencegah infeksi ulang.

It may be that there is a build up of dust which is preventing the cooling fans from doing their job. Your PC should be positioned in a cool place and its air vents should not be blocked.

Always turn off and unplug your PC before you clean it. A can of compressed air can be used to blow out the dust.

Like any piece of equipment, hardware components can start to wear out over time and eventually they will need replacing, usually with a newer model. You should make sure after replacing or upgrading components such as RAM memory or Graphics cards, that they are firmly in place in their slots.
Remove Unwanted Programs

There is a lot of software on the average PC which is unnecessary, and has usually been installed and then forgotten about over time. It is good practice to clean your PC of unwanted programs regularly.

Click on the Start menu then Control Panel. Switch to Classic View if you are in Category view, and double-click Add or Remove Programs. Look for programs that you don't use anymore, click to select them and then click the Remove button to uninstall them.

When your PC starts, Windows loads lots of programs including some you may not be aware are running. Often, these are necessary so that Windows and security software such as anti-virus and firewall can function properly. Sometimes, however, programs that are not necessary can be running in the background using up memory.

Hold the CTRL and ALT keys down and then press the DELETE key once. This brings up the Windows Task manger window which allows you to see at a glance all the programs currently running on your PC. The Applications tab will list programs such as Internet Explorer, Word and any folders you have open. Click to select a particular program and then click the End Task button to stop it.

Another way to stop a program running is if it has an icon on the Taskbar. Usually you can right-click the icon and select to Quit, Disable or Shutdown.

These methods will stop the program running for now, but it will probably start up again when you restart your PC. To prevent it from running completely, you may need to remove it from the list of programs Windows is instructed to run on startup.

To do this, click on your Start menu and then on Programs. From your Programs List, hold your mouse over Startup to see the programs currently set to start when Windows does. Right-click any of the programs and click Delete to remove them from startup.

However, not all startup programs are shown in the Startup folder. To see the others, click Start menu then Run and type 'msconfig' then click OK. This brings up the System Configuration Utility window. Click the Startup tab then un-check the boxes next to any programs that you don't wish to run automatically when Windows starts.
Disable Unnecessary Processes

The Applications tab in Windows Task Manager only shows the main programs that are running. However, this is not everything: there are also various Processes that run too. Click on the Processes tab to see them.

Many of the processes listed in Task Manager will be legitimate tools required for Windows and other programs to run properly. But you may also find some here that you don't need (and sometimes you may find a process belonging to a harmful virus or spyware program).

The information given here shows you the name of the process and also how much processor (CPU) time it is using up as a percentage of the total available. You can also see the amount of memory the program consumes.

You can right-click on any process and choose End process to stop it running temporarily, but it will most likely start up again when you restart your PC. You should be very careful when ending a process that you do not stop a process that is required by Windows.

You can identify what a process is for by using the Web. Type the name of the process, such as "svchost.exe" into a search engine and see what people have to say about it. If they say it is not required it should be OK to stop it. They may also give instructions on how to remove it permanently so it does not reappear in future.

There are varying opinions on what is the best setting, but many recommend putting it at 1.5 times your RAM - so for example if you have 512MB of RAM, you would set both the Initial and Maximum size boxes at 768MB. Click the Set button to accept your changes and see if performance has improved.

If you have plenty of RAM for your computer to use, then setting a large Page File is unnecessary and will just waste space on the hard disk. You should not disable the Page File completely though, as certain programs require it to run properly.

In the second year of operation, two local businesses – the tobacco and cigarette manufacturer Roth-Händle and the pharmaceutical company Knoll - selected the newly developed SAP Financial Accounting (RF) System. This system quickly earned a reputation as an excellent standard package and installations expanded to 40 customers. But product development did not slow on this success, and a second standard product, the Materials Management (RM) System, with modules for purchasing, inventory management and invoice verification, soon followed. The benefits of SAP's integration philosophy showed through, with data from Materials Management flowing straight into Financial Accounting.

SAP moves to Walldorf
In its fifth year of operations, SAP became a GmbH (a closely-held corporation) and took on a new name: Systeme, Anwendungen, Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung ("Systems, Applications, Products in Data Processing"). Revenues were now close to DM 4 million, and the number of employees had grown to 25. In 1977, SAP moved its offices and headquarters to Walldorf. In the same year, it signed its first two foreign customers, two companies from Austria. Just one year later, the customer base had grown to 100 and the number of employees stood at 50. SAP had also introduced another central module of the SAP System – Asset Accounting (RA). At the same time, through the development of a French version of the accounting module, SAP made additional steps toward the international markets.

By the end of the 1970s, new generations of powerful computers provided the framework for a comprehensive software system, and a major step in the development of SAP software - the R/2 System – was taken in 1978. In the same year, as sales headed toward the DM 10 million milestone, SAP began operation of its own computer center in Walldorf which, when completed in 1980, united development teams under one roof. That year SAP's software became even more attractive with the addition of order history to the product range. At the end of 1980, 50 of the 100 largest industrial companies in Germany were SAP customers.

R/2 System goes international
SAP's close relationships with customers led to continuous enhancements in the existing program modules, while important new additions were made, such as the Cost Accounting (RK) System. The R/2 System was now ready for the international market. New computers with drastically improved price/performance ratios helped expand the customer base, and SAP raised its profile still further by appearing at the Systems trade fair in Munich - the company's first-ever presence at an industry trade show.

In 1982, SAP celebrated its tenth anniversary, with sales soaring 48% to over DM 24 million. By the end of the year, 236 companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland were working with the SAP standard programs. Sales continued to climb in the following year, increasing by 45%.

In 1984 SAP took additional steps into the international arena with the founding of SAP (International) AG in Switzerland, whose focus was to increase sales of the R/2 System in international markets. Development teams began work on two new applications, Personnel Management and Plant Maintenance, while the Production Planning and Control System was installed at its first pilot customers.

1985 was characterized by further expansion. The Walldorf headquarters had grown to 10,000 square meters of space, while at the Swiss subsidiary a new headquarters was occupied. SAP systems were now in use in most European countries, and SAP began to penetrate markets outside Europe - with customers in South Africa, Kuwait, Trinidad, Canada and the US.

The DM 100 million sales mark exceeded
SAP continued to pursue international growth with the founding in 1986 of SAP's Austrian subsidiary SAP Österreich Ges.m.b.H. in Vienna. At the parent company, SAP GmbH, the capital stock was increased from DM 500,000 to DM 5 million. The largest single hardware investment to date was made in Walldorf with the installation of an IBM mainframe costing DM 7 million. The year's sales topped DM 100 million, and SAP exhibited at CeBIT, the world's largest IT trade fair, for the first time.

The 15th year of the company's history was again characterized by powerful growth. Branch offices were opened in Munich and Hamburg, and subsidiaries established in four European countries - the Netherlands, France, Spain and the UK. Staff grew to 750, and sales more than doubled to DM 245 million, with 850 companies now using SAP's software systems. In 1987, SAP announced its strategy for a new generation of software, and the R/3 System was born.

SAP goes public
SAP continued to grow in 1988 with the international sales network strengthened by the establishment of subsidiaries in Denmark, Sweden, Italy and the US. Other events included: the founding of SAP Consulting GmbH as a joint project between SAP and the consulting firm Arthur Andersen; the opening of an International Training Center in Walldorf; and the welcoming of Dow Chemical as SAP's 1,000th customer. However, the most significant events of the year were the increase of SAP's capital stock from DM 5 million to DM 60 million, the subsequent conversion of SAP GmbH into a stock corporation, SAP AG, and the flotation of SAP shares on the stock market. SAP shares were quoted on the securities exchanges in Frankfurt and Stuttgart.

During the next year, 1989, SAP shares began trading on the Zurich stock exchange. SAP expanded its alliance and strategic cooperation approaches by taking a majority investment in TOS GmbH in Freiberg. Through the "International User Conference" in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the first "SAPPHIRE" user conference in North America, SAP demonstrated its solid commitment to direct international customer contact. This crucial commitment was to become more and more important to SAP's success in the coming years.

Over 1,000 employees
SAP (International) soon grew to twelve subsidiaries, including Canada, Singapore and Australia. SAP's growing profile in 1989 was evidenced by a number of events: the large number of participants attending the first Annual Stockholders' Meeting, the strong employee growth to more than 1,000, and the expansion of the customer base. Recognizing this success manager magazin named SAP "Company of the Year" – a distinction SAP would receive twice more in the next few years.

In 1990, SAP's capital stock was expanded to DM 85 million with the issue of preference shares. SAP strengthened its commitment to small- and medium-sized businesses by an investment in the software company Steeb and the acquisition of software vendor CAS. In the same year, SAP and Siemens Nixdorf founded SRS GmbH in Dresden, gaining a firm foothold in the East German market. Sales grew strongly to over DM 500 million, and the number of staff grew to 1,700.

SAP develops Russian R/2 version
Strong growth continued unabated in 1991. The acquisition of Steeb GmbH was completed and its activities were merged with CAS to form STEEB-CAS GmbH, creating a high-caliber software company with an attractive product offering for the small- and medium-sized company market. With SAP's Eastern European business developing quickly, SAP collaborated with a local Russian software company to develop an R/2 version in Russian. The first Japanese installation of SAP software was successfully completed. At the end of the fiscal year, the SAP Group boasted 2,225 customers in 31 countries and sales of more than DM 700 million – an increase of over 40 percent. The company had more than 2,500 employees.

In its twentieth year, SAP opened a new Development and Sales Center in Walldorf. The two-year project cost roughly DM 140 million and represented the company's largest single investment to date. In preparation for additional development, SAP's share capital was expanded by DM 15 million to DM 100 million through the issue of 300,000 preference shares. SAP was now firmly established as a global company, with South Africa, Malaysia and Japan the newest additions to its 15 subsidiary companies. By 1992, almost half of the DM 831 million in product revenues were being generated outside Germany, and the availability of the software in 14 different languages was adding significantly to its attractiveness.

Shipment of the client/server system R/3
With the R/3 System release in mid-1992, SAP began to penetrate the mid-size market, and into branches and subsidiaries of large companies. The release of the R/3 client/server system was the most significant event in SAP's history and started a record of growth that even SAP's most optimistic planners had not predicted.

SAP took top position among German software vendors in 1993. On an international scale, the company moved to 7th place among software companies, establishing a clear lead in the global business applications software market. Sales surpassed the important DM 1 billion mark for the first time in 1993, and the global customer base stood at 3,500 companies. SAP made an investment in iXOS Software GmbH with the aim of developing and marketing graphical user interfaces and optical archiving of documents.

New development center in Foster City, California
Releases 2.0 and 2.1 provided R/3 users with even more functionality. With the R/3 System already running on six hardware platforms, SAP and Microsoft signed an agreement to port R/3 to Windows NT. Other events included: the founding of SAP's 18th subsidiary in the Czech Republic, the establishment by SAP America of a development center in Foster City in Silicon Valley, California, and the introduction by SAP Japan of a Kanji version of R/3.

1994 was yet another record-breaking year with sales jumping 66% to over DM 1.8 billion. By the end of the year, SAP employed more than 5,000 staff worldwide, and 200 of the more than 4,000 customers were using the R/3 System in production operation. A Swiss customer was the first customer to go live with R/3 on Microsoft's Windows NT – a mere four months after the platform became available. Since its rollout in 1992, R/3 had now been installed more than 1,000 times. SAP development received ISO 9000 certification, and R/3 Release 2.2 was completed on schedule and included a wide range of enhancements in Logistics. SAP continued to expand its sales organization and strategic alliances. In Germany, SAP acquired a 52% stake in DACOS Software GmbH with the aim of developing an integrated software solution for the retail industry. The 19th subsidiary opened in Mexico City.

The Annual Stockholders' Meeting agreed to a DM 400 million capital increase out of retained earnings, bringing total capital to DM 500 million. The resulting 1:4 stock split was positively received by the market and led to a significant increase in stock price levels.

Microsoft chooses R/3
More than 6,000 companies of all sizes were among SAP customers in 1995, some two-thirds of which solved their IT tasks using the R/3 System. During the year Microsoft joined IBM as an R/3 customer from the high-tech sector.

In 1995, R/3 became the largest source of overall revenues, with a DM 1.7 billion share of total sales of DM 2.7 billion. Growth prospects were strengthened still further with the new R/3 Release 3.0, a functional and technical milestone in R/3 development. With this version the important areas of production planning and control were now comprehensively covered. Another technical addition was the availability of R/3 on the widely used IBM AS/400 platform.

The indirect sales channel concept was introduced in Germany, with SAP forming partnerships with value-added resellers so as to better support small- and medium-sized businesses. A new Service and Support Center opened in Walldorf with room for some 750 employees. SAP now employed more than 7,000 staff.

Global profile: SAP represented in 40 countries
In 1995, SAP further increased its international activities with new subsidiaries formed in China, Argentina, Brazil, Korea, Poland, Russia and Thailand. SAP was now represented in over 40 countries by subsidiaries, branch offices or partner companies. An industry solution for the process industry (eg., chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage industry, and semiconductors) was announced in the US.

With 1,400 stockholders and guests, the number of attendees to the 1995 Annual Stockholders' Meeting was more than triple the 1994 figure, and the ASM approved changing the par value of SAP shares from DM 50 to DM 5. Shortly thereafter SAP entered the German stock index (DAX). Both events had a positive effect on share prices.

Sales reach DM 3.7 billion in SAP's anniversary year
SAP's success continued into its 25th year of operations, with sales exceeding DM 3.7 billion. Over the course of its 25-year history, SAP showed that business processes can be modeled in a standard way across and within industry sectors. When the IT industry developed a flexible and cost-effective client/server architecture, SAP provided its customers with the right product at the right time - the R/3 client/server system.

R/3 becomes Internet-enabled
The success of R/3 has propelled SAP to the top of the global software market. IT is undergoing yet another revolution with the advent of the Internet, and SAP is again there with a solution: the latest version of R/3 provides the first comprehensive, Internet-enabled business application package. Release 4.0, which is already in development, further increases the attractiveness of the R/3 System by making it more user-friendly. Small and mid-sized businesses should especially welcome this development. The R/3 System is here to stay, and users can look forward to its continuing enhancement.

What's Microsoft's Move After Yahoo's Rebuff?

Now that Microsoft Corp. has walked away from its takeover bid for Yahoo Inc., the tech world is turning its focus on the Redmond, Wash. giant's next move. And for some analysts, Microsoft may still be in good shape to cut into Google's online search and advertising stranglehold without Yahoo's help.

Three months ago, Microsoft expressed its desire to stay relevant in the online market with its US $44.6 billion bid for the Web's second biggest search engine. Microsoft sits a distant third to Google Inc. in online search and also lags behind the Mountain View, Calif.-based search empire in attracting advertisers for paid search ads. But with the Yahoo sweepstakes now over (at least for now), some analysts are saying that if Microsoft can refocus on its own online efforts, it can challenge for online supremacy.
Playing to Strengths

"The problem with going after only a search business is you're fighting Google's game," Charlene Li, vice-president and principal analyst at Forrester Research Inc., said. "What Microsoft needs to do is redefine the game."

To accomplish this task, she argues, Microsoft must to stick with its current online advertising strategies, which includes continuing to integrate its recently purchased advertising network aQuantive into its services. Li said the fact that Microsoft has such a large user base with MSN and its other communication properties, gives it a good starting point to differentiate itself from Google.

"One of the promising things Microsoft has done recently is open up the address book in Hotmail, so users can integrate their contacts into Facebook, without giving up their username and password," she said. "Over the past three months, while Microsoft has been occupied, they haven't been as focused on the competition and on innovations like these."

And while nobody is debating the difficult battle Microsoft will face in trying to catch up with Google's search, some analysts see the software giant a lot closer than previously thought in the online advertising market. Matt Rosoff, analyst at Kirkland, Wash.-based Directions on Microsoft, said Microsoft will continue to pursue the ad deals it's created with companies like Facebook, in addition to possibly striking a side deal with Yahoo as well.

"I don't think Microsoft would be against striking some sort of advertising partnership with Yahoo," he said. "That's probably what it really wanted all along and the acquisition was one way to do that and to get some other benefits at the same time. But if it could get the advertising platform on Yahoo search, Microsoft would probably be very happy with that."
Other Allies in the Offing?

Another rumor in the aftermath of the failed Yahoo deal is that Microsoft might be interested in AOL. Platform A, AOL's online advertising network, is the largest in the U.S., and there has been heavy speculation that Time Warner Inc. is considering spawning off the AOL division as its own entity. According to Rosoff, Beijing-based search giant Baidu -- which he said holds about 10 per cent of the search market -- could also be a possibility for Microsoft.

As for Microsoft's enterprise strategy, Forrester principal analyst Rob Koplowitz said he was interested in seeing how Yahoo's expertise in creating large data centers and highly scalable applications would have translated over to Microsoft. But despite this, he said, Microsoft's recent software-as-a-service (SaaS) focus and data center plans will still be in good shape without the merger.

"I just think Microsoft plans to do this on its own now," Koplowitz said. "It's already announced SaaS for Exchange and for SharePoint, and it's pretty well articulated what its data center plans are going to be, so they don't need an acquisition to get where they want to go. In terms of its enterprise business, I think Microsoft will just keep steaming along."

But for as long and drawn out as this takeover bid has been, Rosoff said, there's always a chance Microsoft reconsiders and eventually comes back to the table.

"It all depends on how things evolved over the next three to six months," he said. "If Yahoo continues to report quarterly earnings that aren't particularly good and shareholders get angry and replace the current board and executive leadership, Microsoft could come back."

Sun Offers Peak at Internet Apps Plan

Sun Microsystems Inc. is taking a different approach, compared to its rivals, toward offering a rich Internet applications platform geared for the designer.

Web designers can currently use tools like Microsoft Expression and Adobe Creative Suite, but Sun said it will also offer a designer tool, albeit in an approach that's phased and reflects a "different strength", said Param Singh, senior director of JavaFX at Sun. "

Sun's approach, said Singh, is to first start with delivering tools so the developer can continue building in a familiar environment, like an Integrated Developer Environment (IDE), and yet be able to integrate content from the designer counterpart. "We want to empower our current audience today, extend that, and then continue to work towards that," Singh said at a media roundtable at the JavaOne conference.

However, when pressed for a timeline, Singh said the road map will come later and that "we are just saying we understand the requirements of the designer."

Sun is coming "from a different point in the spectrum" compared to Microsoft and Adobe with its incremental approach and strong developer focus, he said, adding that "different vendors have different strengths in different areas."

Singh noted that while its RIA rivals have strengths on the design side, "what their problem is, is really getting it to work with developers."

In fact, he doesn't believe there is a client platform that covers the full spectrum from graphic designer to rich content creator to scripter to developer. "Whoever delivers that overall experience will be a platform that people will adopt. So that's our vision."

Singh isn't concerned that designers might have their own set of familiar and comfortable tools and environments at the potential expense of the adoption of the JavaFX platform. The market trend, he explained, is such that traditionally-segregated sides want to collaborate and "Java developers want to work with designers and designers want the backend services accessible to them."

Calgary, Alta-based ICEsoft Technologies Inc., a provider of Java-based Web development software for enterprises, was an exhibitor at the conference pavilion. The company's senior software architect, Ted Goddard, said Sun's vision of an end-to-end platform for all aspects of RIA development sounds like a good thing, but he does caution that developers and designers tend to work on very different things.

"In one case, the developers are mostly concerned with the logic of the application and designers are concerned with how it looks. And conceptually, those are really different," said Goddard.

The important thing, he added, is to create an environment where all parties can work on their respective areas "without stepping on each others toes and being stretched out of their comfort region."
Sun's Philosophy

Goddard said that the Java platform already does offer technologies that provide a clean separation between developer and designer tasks. JavaServer Faces, for instance, lets the developer work on the model in JavaBeans and the designer work on the markup with a tool like Adobe Dreamweaver. And although Dreamweaver is an Adobe tool, he said the setup nonetheless let's people use familiar platforms and "everyone is ultimately working on a Java application making it an even more powerful team."

Designers perhaps need to be better aware of capabilities within the Java community system, said Goddard, adding that many of them are probably focused on the PHP scripting language, for instance, because it's "similar to what they've already been doing and they know other designers who are using PHP."

On the fact that Singh had no roadmap to share, Goddard said he thinks Sun will lend an ear to users and eventually develop tools that are useful for them.

In fact, he thinks the Java language is much better for building RIAs given the solid base. All that's really required for better collaboration, he said, is to incorporate the multimedia capabilities that already exist with certain Java tools. "It's really a matter of integrating those existing multimedia technologies on top of this really strong Java base."
